Summer School FOREST RESILIENCE

FOREST RESILIENCE

Resilience of Forest Ecosystems under Global Change

SwissForestLab and NFZ Summer school 2019

Date: 18 August - 24 August 2019

Location: Davos (Eastern Switzerland)

Organized by: SwissForestLab / NFZ.forestnet

Language: English

Type of event: Summer School

Target audience: Ph.D. students (but also MSc in their last year and PostDocs) from any country in the world

Forests cover around one third of the global land area and provide a vast array of ecosystem services crucial for humanity. However, global change jeopardizes forest ecosystems in many different ways. Droughts, forest fire and bark beetle outbreaks reduce tree growth and increase tree mortality. Collapsing stands are not able to provide vital services central to mankind.

As a consequence, the impact of global change on forest ecosystems and their resilience to deal with shocks and disturbances and changing societal conditions needs to be addressed from complementary angles: forest functioning and forest dynamics on the scientific level, sustainable forest management practices on the applied level, as well as the economic, societal and political framework.

The SwissForestLab/NFZ Summer School 2019 aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the resilience of forest ecosystems under the impact of global change. The potential of forest management will be explored while taking into account not only the natural science background but also the socio-economic and political boundary conditions. Experienced researchers in forest science will discuss the potential limitation of disciplinary and interdisciplinary concepts.

The summer school will take place from August 18 to 24, 2019 in Davos, eastern Switzerland, with the possibility to visit the scenic Dischma-Tal.

The participants will reflect on their own scientific work with respect to other disciplinary methods and discuss possible benefits of interdisciplinary approaches in their field.

The Summer School is open to PhD students (but also MSc in their last year and PostDocs) in forest research and related disciplines from any country in the world.
