Is the premature browning of European forests a harbinger of tree mortality or merely a sign of temporary stress? In 2018, scientists were still unable to answer this question. However, one thing was clear: the frequency of extreme events, including droughts, had increased after the hot summer of 2003. Although there were also droughts in the last century, they were not associated with such high temperatures as today. In addition to global warming, various manifestations of global change are triggering a variety of cascading processes in and around forests. It is complicated...

The summer school "Forests and Extremes: Crisis or Transition?" (August 18-25, 2024, Davos) aims to address the complexity of compound and cascading events. Together with national and international experts from various disciplines, participants will explore the unknown: the future of terrestrial ecosystems with a focus on forests! Through field trips, lectures, group work and numerous opportunities for exchange with colleagues and practitioners, participants will gain practical and theoretical knowledge about future extremes. This includes an understanding of their expected impact on the functioning and performance of forests and other ecosystems, the consequences for society and the economy, and possible response options.

The Summer School is jointly organized by the WSL Extremes research programme, the SwissForestLab and the NFZ.forestnet.

The program and further details can be found in our flyer.
